It's Spring at LAHH!

March 2009
Dear Reader,

In order to have HOPE, a person must be certain that their need for happiness will be fulfilled by something that is outside of themselves.
I was reminded of this on my way to work this past Friday, March 27th at PM. I exited the 405 freeway and saw a homeless man standing on the side of the road with a sign "Homeless, Can you help? God Bless." I caught myself staring at this man, which isn't normal for me. I looked at him and handed him a dollar from my wallet. He smiled and said thank you. I turned my head to look out the front of the car, and in the rearview mirror, I saw the homeless man give the dollar to the people in the car behind me! I was shocked, in a positive way, not angry. I was in awe of what I just saw with my own eyes.

I slowly turned my head towards him, my eyes were wide open, and he says with a smile, "They needed gas money. Everyone can give." I took out the last money, $5, from my wallet and gave it to him saying, "maybe you are hungry?" He smiled and said, "yeah I am. I'll go right now to get something to eat." Then smiling at me he said, "you take care of yourself."

In truth, I tell you, this really happened. This is only possible because this man has HOPE!

Guido and I are recruiting for a supervisor for the Companionship of Work - Janitorial Services. We are trying to recruit from the soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The day after encountering the homeless man, I was reading in the WSJ, "A General's Personal Battle" by Yochi J. Dreazen, Sat/Sun March 28-29, 2009, W1, "The Army says that for the first time the rate of suicide in the military exceeded that of the general population last year..." It goes on to say, "And there is a higher incidence of suicide among people who have been diagnosed with PTSD, like the returning veterans."

HOPE. It is something from another world, but in this world. After meeting this homeless man, I am more certain of the fact that LAHH needs a supervisor for the purpose to give someone HOPE and thus life. We press forwards!

LAHH is hard at work since beginning the first Companionship of Work -
Janitorial Services contracts within the Villages at Cabrillo. Our first walk-thru with Maintenance Supervisor, Robert Marks, gave us positive feedback on the job well done by Brandon, Paul, Stephen, Nancy and Guido!
LAHH has been able to grow within Cabrillo by adding an additional 10,400 square feet. Our growth allows the (OS1) specialists to team clean while reducing the environmental energy impact. One of many great aspects of (OS1) is its green system engineering. (OS1) incorporates safe cleaning practices such as the ergonomic aspects of the tools meaning our tools are lighter and able to be maneuvered to fit the size of each cleaning worker.

We asked Robert Marks, Maintenance Supervisor, "What does it mean for you to have a green cleaning system used by persons with intellectual disabilities within several of your facilities at Cabrillo?" Robert: "It means that we are committed to doing what we can, to be of service to our environment and to the people of our community; more importantly, to individuals that have overcome personal hardships related to their intellectual and/or physical disabilities.  It means believing in others, and their ability to impact both their own environment and society at large, when given the proper tools to do so."
Comments on our Progress

Zandra Perkins is the Job Coach at LAHH. The work of a Job Coach is always something new. Zandra started on the first day, with Brandon, Stephen, and Paul, and sat through the human resources and legal requirements for each employee. During Boot Camp, Zandra was there every day and participated with the class, by taking notes and providing encouraging feedback. With kindess and sensitivity to each person, Zandra has joined the team of LAHH embracing everyone and successfully job coaching.

Zandra recently shared with Nancy and Guido the positive comments she receives nightly from the occupants of one of our customers "it's amazing what they are doing and they are doing an excellent job cleaning this building. I have worked here for 7 years and the building has never been this clean!"

Zandra also shared with us her thoughts in that,"the way that you (Guido and Nancy) treat each employee and how much time and attention that you give to them shows me your sincerity in doing this work. It is really like a family, it feels like a family when I am here and that also gives me great hope for the future of each of the guys. I have seen Brandon, Stephen, and Paul grow and gain more confidence in their job and this is the entire point!"
